Description

The Vice-President Scientific and Clinical Research will work with the Institute's Leadership, Principal Investigators and Baylor Health Care System team to develop scientific and medical strategic direction for the institute, and to provide adequate guidance and support to achieve the operational R&D goals of the Institute.  He/she is responsible for managing the research support operations, including more than 150 employees. 
 
Specific Responsibilities
 Work with the BRI COO and Research Operations Board to develop a scientific and medical research Strategic Plan, and monitors its execution. 
 Provide adequate support to achieve the R&D operational goals of the Institute.
 Manage the clinical and scientific research support team of the Institute, including Research directors, managers, coordinators and other BRI-employed research personnel.
 Participate in and support the development and negotiation of outside scientific and commercial collaborations, alliances, and licensing agreements necessary to support the continuing development of the Institute's scientific programs, and their funding. 
 Ensure that the Institute's research programs are aligned with the HealthCare System's key service lines and consistent with the Institute's Strategic Plan.
 Develop and implement plans for recruiting key research and clinical scientists necessary to achieve the goals of the Strategic Research Plan.
 Assist with fundraising and external presentations as needed.
 Serve as the primary scientific resource for the Institute's IRBs, especially in the assessment of scientific validity of research protocols (IRB meets biweekly).
 Determine whether investigator initiated protocols require an IND or an independent DSMB.
 Organize and chair BRI internal DSMB.
 Establish and provide support for external DSMB's:
      Cancer Immunotherapy DSMB
      HIV/AIDS Vaccine DSMB
      Islet Cell Transplantation DSMB
Serve as BRI scientific liaison with academic institutions, including University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, UT-Dallas, and Texas A&M.
Serve as the primary BRI scientific contact for BHCS.
Provide support to major BRI research components.
Act as BRI scientific liaison with pharmaceutical companies.
 

Qualifications

Education & Experience
  Ph.D. or M.D/ Ph.D. degree.
  Successful track record of research activities
  Experience with IRB processes and procedures, DSMB Guidelines, NIH grant submission and management, and risk management and compliance programs.
  Experience with technology transfer / intellectual property management (desirable)
