Description
General Summary: The Medical Technologist performs a variety of complex diagnostic laboratory tests that are intended to assist with improving the overall status of patients by providing accurate laboratory results. The Medical Technologist is actively involved in department activities, transdisciplinary team activities, and LifeCare activities to ensure individualized, patient-centered health care for all patient populations admitted to LifeCare Hospital.
Patient Population: Delivers direct patient care appropriate to the patients served. The ages of the patients served are adult (18-65 years of age) and geriatric (65 and older).

Essential Functions:  

1. Demonstrates proper performance of skills reflected and validated by the Medical Technologist competency checklist.
2. Performs diagnostic tests in accordance with the Laboratory Policy and Procedure Manual.
3. Performs high complexity, moderate complexity and CLIA waived diagnostic testing in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
4. Performs venipuncture in accordance with established policies and procedures for patient--s age.
5. Performs a wide variety of laboratory tests including but not limited to Transfusion Services, CBC, CBC with Differential, and BMP (glucose, BUN, creatinine, calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide).
6. Responds to in-house emergencies and performs appropriate laboratory duties.
7. Documents and maintains accurate records on all laboratory equipment and patient specimens and results.
8. Adheres to LifeCare policies, procedures, all safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations.
The above listed duties are general statements of required major duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. They do not exclude other duties as assigned.

Requirements  

Experience: Minimum twelve months training in a structured hospital program or three years hospital laboratory practice

Education: Bachelor--s degree in either a medical technology program or a bachelor--s degree in one of the biological or chemical services with completion of an accredited academic program in medical technology.
Licensure/Certification: Current state license/certification if required in state where currently practicing by a nationally accrediting agency (ASCP, AMT, NCA, etc.).
