JOB REQUIREMENTS: High school graduate or equivalent. Six months' previous work experience in cytology, processing gyn and non-gyn specimens required. Previous clerical/data entry work experience required. Successful completion of a medical terminology course is required OR an additional six months of processing gyn and non-gyn specimens. Anatomy course-work is preferred. Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization. High level of organizational skills and attention to detail required.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Processes pap smear and non-gyn specimens. Accessions all specimens by prioritizing them, assigning the specimens a unique number and verifying patient information. Creates slides by processing them with the Thin Prep technique. Stains and cover slips slides. Maintains all equipment in the cytology department. Processes non-gyn specimens, which includes, verifying information and separating fixed samples from air-dried samples. Documents color and quantity (ml.) of specimens, spinning the samples down and places the specimen in the Thin Prep machine for slide creation. Reprocesses specimens as requested by the Cytotechnologist and Pathologist. Assigns abnormals to the Pathologists on duty. Sends out specimens as needed. Enters demographics and accessing number of each specimen into the system. Troubleshoots pap slides and requisitions that do not match or have incorrect information by rejecting specimen per written protocol and follow up of specimen return. Works closely with clinic department personnel on tracking specimens. Works closely with department on shipping supplies. Maintains storage of pap smear specimens to include disposal of specimens according to protocols. Pulls pap smear specimens to ship out for outside testing. Tracks and follow-ups on reports to give to pathologist for sign out. Performs other duties as requested by management, to include stocking, ordering and tracking supplies for nurses and other medical staff, filing slides, creating boxes, sorting requisitions. Exposed to body fluids and working with chemicals.
